Seven Steps To Repairing A Concrete Floor
Ever had a problem with your flooring even if it's made of concrete? Chances are you have come across some unsightly cracks on the floor and they may run deeper than you think. Repairing your floors is more than just about filling up those cracks with an epoxy or cement. It takes a lot more than that and you have to do it right so that the repairs not only do justice to the look of the floor; they should last a long time as well. Here are the steps that you should take when repairing your concrete flooring.
• Find the problem – It's not enough that you see where the problem is. It's important that you get to the root of the problem by looking for the source of the cracks that appear on your floor. Check for any objects that may be too heavy that are causing the cracks. You might also want to check out any pipes that run through your floor to see if there has been any expansion or contraction that has created the cracking.
• Measure the problem – This is not about thinking about the extent of the cracks. This is actually getting down on your knees and measuring the cracks that have appeared on your flooring. Get a measuring tape or a ruler to determine the size of the affected area that you think should be repaired. This will also include bumps and depressions other than cracks.
• Break it down a layer – The first thing you need to do is to break the surface of the concrete. You need to get rid of that smooth layer of concrete so that you create space or a rough surface for the new layer of cement that you will pour onto it. A surface that is rough will make it easier for the cement to bond. A small hammer is all you need for small tasks.
• Clean it out – There will definitely be some dust and debris left after chipping the floor so make sure you get rid of all that first. Doing this will leave the solid surface that is needed for the new cement to stick to.
• Mix the cement – Now create the new mixture of cement for your flooring. Make sure to mix the dry materials first before anything else.
• Get the floor wet – Get the floor area that you wish to repair wet. Just pour clean water on the surface but do not flood the floor area. Just make sure that everything is damp because this will help the new cement to stick with the rough surface that you exposed earlier. It also helps the mixture to dry gradually and not immediately which is something you want to avoid or else the cracks will appear again.
• Apply – Place the new layer of cement on the floor and then level it with a trowel. Make sure to allow the cement to shrink and settle and eventually dry. This will depend on how humid your conditions are. When the surface hardens, splash a little more water on the surface to make it easier for the finish.
